The finer specifics of the deal have emerged, with Alan Nixon alleging on Patreon that United were able to incorporate a 15% sell-on provision in the deal for the English goalkeeper.
According to the source, United only received £15 million from the London club for the goalie, but there are add-ons in the transaction that are difficult to trigger.
United chose to trade their former academy goalkeeper because he appeared to demand assurances of becoming the Red Devils’ number one.
Figures for Henderson sales
In addition to the substantial sell-on clause, which is identical to the other youngsters sold by United this summer, the Red Devils have add-ons in the transaction that can be triggered.
Henderson must make 100 appearances to qualify for the £2.5 million bonus payment, so the contract benefits both clubs and Palace will not have to pay up for a few years.
The other half of United’s £5 million incentive is based on league position, appearances, and internationals.
Was United correct to sell Henderson?
The answer to this question is unquestionably yes. The goalkeeper was never going to be the club’s first choice, especially after the team bought Andre Onana from Inter Milan last summer.
Henderson’s move to the London club came only after Nottingham Forest negotiated a loan with the option to buy.
After a challenging summer in terms of outgoings at Old Trafford, United will no doubt be thrilled to include a very large sell-on clause in the contract to sell the English goalkeeper.
Altay Bayindir, United’s replacement, is yet to appear for the Red Devils this summer after joining from Fenerbahce in the summer.
