Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Shaquil Barrett was quite honest when discussing his future with the franchise.
All things considered, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had an excellent season.
They were questioned before the season began, repeatedly throughout the season, and were frequently regarded as one of the least promising playoff teams once they did secure a spot. They defied all of those odds by winning their Wild Card battle against the Philadelphia Eagles and then putting up a spirited effort against the Detroit Lions in the Divisional Round.
Following the loss, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers players returned home to clear up their lockers now that the season was over. During the locker cleanup, the players were made accessible to the media to answer any last-minute questions before heading into the offseason.
Players and things change on NFL rosters every offseason, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are no exception. One guy in particular, who is still under contract for another season, that will be interesting to observe is outside linebacker Shaquil Barrett
Barrett’s name has surfaced as a guy the Buccaneers may cut this offseason in order to preserve more salary space to sign younger, more productive players elsewhere. Barrett was quite open with the media on Monday about the realities of his current predicament in Tampa Bay.
The nine-year NFL veteran, who went undrafted out of Colorado State, has had ups and downs throughout his career. Barrett has been chosen to two Pro Bowls and led the league in sacks in 2019, ranking fourth in Defensive Player of the Year voting and making the All-Pro second team.
He hasn’t been as productive since then, and he had a devastating Achilles injury little over a season ago. If he stays in Tampa Bay, it will most likely be at a steep discount, and his role will be reduced as the Bucs seek to replace him with a younger and more athletic OLB/EDGE.
