Swindon Town owner Clem Morfuni stated he does not regret manager Michael Flynn’s departure, weeks after extending his contract.
Flynn was fired on Monday after less than eight months in command and just six weeks after signing a new long-term contract with the League Two club.
Swindon are 15th in the table, having won three of their last 15 matches.
“I do not have any regrets.” Morfuni told BBC Points West that it was the finest option they could have made at the moment.
“We didn’t want to lose the manager at the moment – we were flying – and there were a few clubs interested in him, so we wanted to make sure we kept him.
“However, the results didn’t work two months later, so we had to make a change. This is a results-driven business. It’s extremely ruthless, and we had to do what was necessary.”
Morfuni, who was appointed at the end of last season, is the Robins’ fifth manager since June 2022, following Ben Garner, Scott Lindsey, Jody Morris, and now Flynn.
Morfuni also revealed that Gavin Gunning has been appointed interim head coach till the end of the season.
Gunning is the club’s development phase loans manager, having previously overseen three games between managerial appointments.
“Gav has been in the building for two to three years, he’s the right option, he has a good rapport with the players, they will play for him which is really good,” he said.
“He’s the proper appointment, and we need to make sure we support him. “I believe he’s qualified for the job.”
Swindon are now eight points from the play-off places and will face Tranmere Rovers on Saturday.
After reaching the play-offs in 2021-22, the team lost out on a top-six berth last season, and Morfuni said he wasn’t ruling out the possibility of contending for promotion again this season under Gunning.
“I will support him 100% – we just need to make sure results go our way,” he said.
“There are 54 points to play for; I’m always hopeful and pushing for them.
“We understand what we need to do. I haven’t given up hope for advancement; we just need to work harder for it.”
