Jon Worthington, the academy manager, will lead Huddersfield Town into battle this weekend.
Following the sacking of Darren Moore, academy manager Jon Worthington has been appointed as caretaker manager of Huddersfield Town’s first team. The former Terriers midfielder will oversee Saturday’s Yorkshire derby against relegation rivals Sheffield Wednesday.
Worthington, who was born in Dewsbury, will be backed by Kevin Russell, the B team manager, and academy coach Michael Tonge. A Town statement read: “Huddersfield Town Academy Manager Jon Worthington will take caretaker command of the First Team for our Sky Bet Championship home game against Sheffield Wednesday.
“No stranger to Town fans, Dewsbury-born Worthington became a Terrier at the age of nine and is a product of the club’s academy. Jon rose through the ranks to make over 200 senior games between 2002-2009, becoming a fan favourite and Club captain along the way, with his finest hour in blue and white promotion at the end of the 2003/04 campaign.
“Returning to the Millers Oils High Performance Complex after retiring in 2015, Worthington was first appointed as our U17 coach in June 2019, before moving on to lead the U19 group a year later. After two solid seasons in that post, he was promoted to B Team Manager in 2021, and the former midfielder rose to the position of Academy Manager in 2022.After relinquishing his B Team coaching duties to focus on the larger Academy in January 2024, Kevin Russell was added to the technical team, and the two men will now work together to manage our First Team. Worthington has helped manage the First Team debuts of a number of youngsters while at the Huddersfield Town Academy, several of whom are still part of our present squad.
