Charlton Athletic is happy to announce the signing of Thierry Small.
The 19-year-old left-sided defender has agreed to a contract until the end of the season, with a club option for an extra year.
Small stated, “I’m so happy that the deal is done, and I’m excited and optimistic about the future now.”
“I’m an energetic player who enjoys going after players one-on-one. I am also quite passionate, and you will witness a lot of character and fight. I’ll do everything I can on the pitch to give the supporters a good show.”
Technical Director Andy Scott stated: “Thierry is a young player who has played for a number of very excellent clubs, and we believe he has the talent, physicality, and mentality to perform at this level.
“Because it’s a short-term contract, it’s an opportunity for him to demonstrate to us that he’s capable of staying with us for longer. He gives us additional competition on the left side, which is an area where we’ve been seeking to expand.”
Small was born in Solihull and began his youth career with West Bromwich Albion before joining Everton at the age of 11.
In January 2021, the defender made history by becoming Everton’s youngest player. At the age of 16 years and 176 days, he made his FA Cup debut against Sheffield Wednesday at Goodison Park.
Small joined Southampton in the summer of 2021, despite interest from Europe’s top teams, and made his senior debut in February 2022 against Coventry City in an FA Cup match.
The teenager, who has represented England at the U17 and U18 levels, spent time on loan at Port Vale and St Mirren during the 2022/23 season.
He returned to the Scottish Premiership team on a season-long loan last summer until being recalled by Southampton in January 2024.
