BREAKING NEWS : Hull City key player has announced his retirement at the age of 28.

A Preston-born footballer who began his career with PNE has retired at 28.
James Weir, a former Preston North End junior midfielder, has announced his retirement at the age of 28.

The Preston-born midfielder began his career with the Lilywhites, spending three years in their academy before joining Manchester United. He made one senior appearance for Manchester United after attending their academy for eight years.
Weir left Old Trafford to join Hull City, where he made three Championship matches and four Carabao Cup outings.

Before moving abroad, the midfielder spent time on loan at Wigan Athletic and Bolton Wanderers in League One. He joined Slovakian club FK Pohronie in March 2020 and then transferred to Hungary’s top flight with MTK Budapest. Weir spent a season in Hungary before returning to Slovakia to join ViON Zlate Moravce, where his contract was terminated in mid-January.

He decided to terminate his career and revealed it on social media. Weir wrote in an Instagram post: “Life update. After much study and consideration, I have chosen to hang up my boots professionally. A

I’m delighted to pursue my next dream outside of the beautiful game.”

Will Keane, a current Preston North End player, responded to Weir’s post with: “Congrats on a great career, mate, all the best.”

Weir concludes his career with the Red Devils, where he won two consecutive Under-21 Premier League titles. He won one cap for England’s under-19 team, alongside Jordan Pickford, John Stones, and James-Ward Prowse.
