In order to maintain their chances of qualifying, they needed to win the second game, which was played in Dublin.
McClean was included in the starting lineup for the match against the Netherlands as a result of his outstanding performance in Paris.
Four minutes into the game, Virgil Van Dijk conceded a penalty after McClean’s corner, and Adam Idah converted from the spot to give them the perfect start.
After fifteen minutes, they were tied when Cody Gakpo, a colleague of Van Dijk’s from Liverpool, slid a shot past Gavin Bazunu from 12 yards.
Denzel Dumfries and Wout Weghorst combined to break down the defense and score the game-winning goal for the Dutch in the 56th minute.
The results leave the Republic of Ireland with three points, six points behind third-place Greece, with only three games left.
In advance of this weekend’s match at the STK Cae Ras against Grimsby Town, McClean returns to North Wales.
