Sunderland provide new signing injury update after deadline-day transfer

Timothee Pembele, who joined Sunderland on the final day of the transfer window from PSG, has received an injury update.

Sunderland has announced a new hire. After a long-term injury setback, Timothee Pembele is undergoing a personal maintenance program.

The right back, who is 21 years old, joined the Black Cats on transfer deadline day from PSG for an unknown sum and agreed to a five-year contract at the Stadium of Light. A cruciate ligament injury limited Pembele, a France U23 international, to just five senior games for PSG last season.

In a statement, Sunderland said Pembele, who returned to action earlier this year after a protracted injury, is “currently undergoing a personal maintenance programme alongside the club’s performance team.”Pembele last played in a competitive match in March, and his schedule is expected to get busier over the coming month as he moves from partial training to first-team participation.

Sunderland’s sporting director Kristjaan Speakman said after Pembele’s signing that Pembele “possesses a range of attributes that we wanted to add to our squad this summer, which will build depth and add competition within the group.”

The fact that he has decided to devote his long-term future to our club is evidence of our ongoing development, and we are eager to assist him in adjusting to life at Sunderland AFC.

We are happy to welcome Timothee to Wearside and believe he can become an important player for us. However, we will be patient with him while he improves his fitness and then competes for a spot in our team.

On the day of the transfer deadline, Nazariy Rusyn, Mason Burstow, and Adil Aouchiche also joined Sunderland. These players could make their Black Cats debuts this weekend against QPR.
