Eddie Howe tells what he sees ‘every day’ at Newcastle’s training field that gives them optimism.

Newcastle United host Brentford at St James’ Park on Saturday, and Eddie Howe has urged his team to bounce back with the mindset that was at the core of the Magpies’ outstanding season last season.

Eddie Howe has stated that the mentality that ‘drove’ Newcastle United to extraordinary heights can still be seen.

Newcastle only lost five league games last season on their road to returning to the Champions League for the first time in 20 years. No other Premier League team had a better defensive record than Newcastle, who ended ahead of Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, and Chelsea on the table.

Newcastle have already lost three games in the opening weeks of this campaign, after facing four of the sides who finished in the top seven last time out, but it is easy to forget that Howe’s team are only three points worse off than at this stage last season. Howe is certainly staying calm ahead of Saturday’s huge game against Brentford and vowed he had not ‘lost faith in the group’.

How safe is Eddie Howe once Newcastle Wembley giddiness wears off?

“Getting my message across to the players and how I feel is one of the arts of management and, collectively, the players know as well,” he told reporters. “They will critique themselves, judge themselves, and they will know where their own levels are at. Together, we come forward and we go again into the next game.

They’re a fantastic group to work with. The mentality is present; it does not simply change. Last year, our philosophy was the driving force behind our consistency. That isn’t gone. That is correct.
