Gus Poyet has told Football League World that he believes Illan Meslier will continue at Leeds United when the January transfer window opens, despite the French goalkeeper sticking put in the summer.
Sam Allardyce fired Meslier, 23, for the final four Premier League games of last season. Many believed Meslier would be sold after losing his starting spot and the club being demoted. He has, however, remained in Leeds.
Despite the addition of Karl Darlow from Newcastle United. Angus Kinnear even revealed that we had made a proposal for Meslier in excess of £20 million. Celta Vigo in Spain shown interest in the £5 million Leeds signing.
Meslier, on the other hand, has stayed put and been the team’s first choice this season. The goalkeeper has been outstanding in all eight Championship games. He has four clean sheets, all of which have come in our previous four games.”Leeds made a strong decision in giving Meslier the opportunity to be the number one goalkeeper, and goalkeepers are difficult to move. I would rather that he make his own decision about his future.
“Every now and then, you find yourself in the midst of a financial crisis.” Goalkeeper is a unique position. Many good enough to play but don’t get the opportunity. I can’t see him moving, I think he will stay at Leeds.”
Poye Meslier will remain at Leeds when January arrives
He has been superb this season. Four clean sheets sounds as if the Leeds defence has not been tested but Meslier has had to make a number of saves. He now has 134 appearances for Leeds under his belt.
A huge amount, for a goalkeeper of just 23. Meslier is starting to claw back the form that saw him linked with some of Europe’s biggest clubs after the first couple of Premier League season. He must be kept.
