Alan Shearer describes why he would like to rejoin the team if he were still playing.

With 260 goals, Newcastle United great Alan Shearer is the all-time Premier League leading goalscorer.

Alan Shearer, a Newcastle United icon, has admitted that if he were still playing, he would go for Manchester City because of the quality of opportunities they produce.

Shearer has one of the best goalscoring records of any striker in history, and he is the current Premier League leading scorer with 260 goals. After impressing at Southampton and Blackburn Rovers, the 53-year-old reportedly turned down offers from Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson to join his hometown club, where he scored 206 goals in 405 appearances.

In the most recent episode of The Rest is Football podcast, Shearer was asked which team, past or present, he would join with if he were in his prime. The Englishman expressed his decision to choose City without hesitation.

“Man City [because] goals, goals, goals,” he stated. “I mean, you’re basically guaranteed goals.

“You look at [Erling] Haaland now, he is a magnificent player no doubt about it, but the chances that he gets, the goals he scores and even the chances that he misses sometimes, which is fine because you have to get in there, so I have to say Man City because you are guaranteed goals and success.”

Gary Lineker and Micah Richards joined Shearer on the podcast and both agreed they would pick City as well. However, Lineker chose Pep Guardiola’s 2010 Barcelona team, while the Blues’ former full-back chose Arsenal’s Invincible team, having grown up supporting the Gunners.

City play Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux on Saturday, following their Carabao Cup defeat to Shearer’s beloved Newcastle.
