Shearer, a former Newcastle and Blackburn striker, believes Villa’s midfield was “too strong” for De Zerbi’s team. He also emphasized Matty Cash’s significant influence.

“They completely dominated Brighton in every position from start to finish,” he said on Match of the Day.

“They were certainly too strong in midfield for them.” They were willing to commit players forward, to press the fullbacks really, really high, and to punish Brighton when they got into such positions. They simply couldn’t keep up with them.

“I thought Matty Cash was superb down that right-hand side, and he certainly demonstrated that when he set up the first goal, the way they move the ball, his movement was excellent.” They know where they’re going to put the ball, and he knows exactly where he’s going to put it.
