5 realistic transfer targets Newcastle could sign for free in January

Newcastle’s financial strength allows them to potentially outbid other teams in terms of pre-contract wages. Their impressive 4-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League was the standout result of the European round, drawing even more attention to their remarkable campaign last season.

In the Premier League, where money is plentiful, Newcastle is a major attraction for players seeking lucrative financial offers. Since their takeover in October 2021, they have successfully lured top-tier talents such as Alexander Isak, Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, and others. Additionally, European competition further adds to their appeal. Here, we consider five players whose contracts are expiring in the summer, making them potential ideal signings for manager Eddie Howe in the context of ‘pre-contracts’ that can be offered as early as January.

1. Adrien Rabiot

Newcastle’s midfield is strong, but to consistently qualify for the top four, they need European experience. While players like Sean Longstaff, Joelinton, and Joe Willock are impressive, Rabiot’s extensive résumé, including a World Cup win with France, multiple trophies with Paris Saint-Germain, a Serie A title with Juventus, 39 international caps, and 68 European appearances, makes him a suitable addition for Newcastle’s ambitions beyond the top five.

2. Piotr Zielinski

Similar to Rabiot, Zielinski offers midfield experience with a more attacking style. Having spent eight seasons at Napoli, he has accumulated 338 appearances, 50 goals, and two trophies. With 83 caps for Poland, including a World Cup goal, Zielinski can provide a like-for-like option to rejuvenate the midfield ranks at St. James’ Park.

3. Nico Williams

Nico Williams, the younger brother of Athletic Bilbao’s Inaki, is considered one of the world’s most promising young wingers. With his contract expiring in the summer, several top clubs will be vying for his signature. Given Newcastle’s recent focus on youth signings, including Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon, Williams could be the perfect addition to enhance their wide options.

4. Presnel Kimpembe

Newcastle’s priority in the next year may include a high-quality center-back. While Fabian Schar and Sven Botman are exceptional, additional depth is necessary for consistent top-tier challenges. Kimpembe, with his wealth of international and club experience, could be a valuable asset. His 236 appearances for Paris Saint-Germain, 28 international caps, and his left-footed profile make him a rare and sought-after find in the game.

5. Guido Rodriguez

As a midfield enforcer, Rodriguez would be an excellent addition for Newcastle when facing strong counter-attacking teams. Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes excel further up the field but lack the same level of ball recovery and toughness exhibited by players like Rodri, Fabinho, and Casemiro at other English clubs. Rodriguez’s consistent presence in Real Betis and Argentina’s midfield for the past four years underscores his worth and makes him an ideal candidate to enhance competition in the Newcastle squad.
