ALAN SHEARER SAYS £20M STAR TOTTENHAM SOLD PLAYING ‘BEST FOOTBALL OF HIS CAREER’

Alan Shearer believes that former Tottenham Hotspur defender Kieran Trippier is currently delivering the best performance of his career at Newcastle United. Despite previously playing for Atlético Madrid in the Champions League, Trippier made a significant move to Newcastle during the January 2022 transfer window. At that time, Newcastle, under new Saudi-led ownership and managed by Eddie Howe, were struggling to avoid relegation.

Shearer considers Trippier to be a “game-changer” for Newcastle, and the Toon Army supporters were thrilled to acquire his talents based on his past success at Tottenham. During his time at Spurs, he was an underappreciated right-back who played a crucial role in the team’s consistent Champions League qualification and even reaching the final.

Tottenham had sold Trippier to another club for £20 million in 2019, and it’s only now that they can claim to have successfully replaced him. In Newcastle, he has made a significant impact, and Shearer describes him as “absolutely bossing it.”

Shearer mentioned that he had not closely followed Trippier’s career but believes that the football he is currently playing at Newcastle represents the pinnacle of his career. Trippier’s arrival in Newcastle, having recently won La Liga with Atlético Madrid, was seen as a significant gamble due to the club’s relegation threat, but he brought a positive change in attitude and professionalism among the players.

Shearer commends Trippier’s defensive prowess, describing him as tough to beat and a great leader. He also highlights his excellent deliveries into the box. Shearer feels that it was a mistake on Tottenham’s part to sell Trippier, especially as the club was going through significant changes with key figures leaving. The subsequent struggles at the right-back position at Spurs underscore the belief that they should have retained Trippier, who is now thriving at Newcastle.
