Sheffield Wednesday has appointed Sal Bibbo as the new goalkeeping coach, according to BBC Sheffield journalist Rob Staton. This addition to manager Danny Rohl’s backroom team follows other recent appointments, including Chris Powell and Sascha Lense.
Sal Bibbo, a former professional goalkeeper, spent most of his playing career in the lower leagues with clubs such as Reading, Havant & Waterlooville, and Bath City. He transitioned to coaching, initially joining Reading as their part-time goalkeeping coach before becoming full-time in 2006. Bibbo has also coached at the Nike academy and, in 2019, joined Arsenal as the goalkeeping coach for their under-23 team, where he worked with notable players like Petr Cech, Bernd Leno, and Emiliano Martinez. In 2021, he moved to Brighton, coaching their youth goalkeepers.
Bibbo’s coaching abilities have been praised by players under his guidance. Brighton goalkeeper Killian Cahill mentioned that Bibbo played a significant role in his development, emphasizing his impact on confidence and various aspects of goalkeeping.
The appointment of Bibbo to Sheffield Wednesday is seen as a positive move, given his experience and reputation as a respected goalkeeping coach. With Sheffield Wednesday currently conceding a considerable number of goals in the Championship, Bibbo’s expertise is hoped to contribute to shoring up the team’s defense and improving the performances of goalkeepers Devis Vasquez and Cameron Dawson. The Owls currently rank fourth in the Championship for goals conceded this season, with 27 goals against them. The expectation is that Bibbo’s influence will help address defensive issues and contribute to the team’s overall improvement.
