Eddie Howe reveals Newcastle “internal” meeting as sack rumours gather speed after Luton defeat

Newcastle United suffered another setback with a 1-0 defeat to Luton Town at Kenilworth Road, extending their disappointing run to just one win in their last six matches, all of which ended in losses.

Luton’s Andros Townsend secured the victory with the lone goal in the first half, heading in at the back post from a corner flicked on by Ross Barkley. Despite Newcastle’s efforts to level the score, it was Rob Edwards’ team that came closest to adding to their lead. Barkley struck the underside of the bar with a powerful 30-yard drive, and Jacob Brown replicated the feat in the second half, courtesy of a setup by Elijah Adebayo. Although Alexander Isak believed he had equalized, VAR ruled him offside. Edwards mentioned that the team aimed to win the game for their absent captain, who had been discharged from the hospital on Thursday.

Reports suggest that the owners of Newcastle United, the Public Investment Fund (PIF), are dissatisfied with manager Eddie Howe. The recent loss to Luton, marking the team’s fourth consecutive away defeat from St James’ Park, is expected to intensify speculation about Howe’s potential dismissal.

In his post-game reaction, Howe acknowledged the team’s internal discussions about the importance of away form, emphasizing the need for consistency both at home and away. He expressed disappointment in the team’s performance, stating, “It epitomized our away form today, we didn’t compete well in the first half. We were reactive instead of proactive.” The growing pressure on Howe is compounded by the challenges in away performances, and PIF’s dissatisfaction adds to the speculation surrounding a potential managerial change at Newcastle United.
