Darren Moore on why the players needed to train on Christmas

Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Röhl has gone with Darren Moore over Garry Monk and Carlos Carvalhal in Christmas training decision

All football managers face a significant decision during this time of the year – whether or not to conduct training on Christmas Day. Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Röhl has already made his decision, and according to The Star, his players will attend a training session at Middlewood Road today before heading to Coventry City for tomorrow’s Championship clash.

The trend of prioritizing business-like preparation over traditional holidays has become increasingly prevalent in modern football. While some clubs still observe Christmas Day as a day off, a majority of players across the country will don their boots and hit the field for final preparations leading up to the Boxing Day schedule.

Wednesday’s inclusion in the group of teams training on Christmas Day was expected, given Röhl’s meticulous approach to preparation. His training methods, known for their intensity and demands, are reportedly well-received by the squad. This decision aligns with the practice of his predecessor, Darren Moore, who also opted for training on Christmas Day last year. A Covid-19 outbreak within the squad in 2021 resulted in an unofficial day off for most players. In contrast, previous managers Garry Monk and Carlos Carvalhal preferred giving the day off before away games later in the day.

The focus of this training is in anticipation of the Boxing Day match against Coventry City, where Sheffield Wednesday aims to recover from the disappointment of their recent 2-1 loss to Cardiff City. Coventry City, who secured an impressive 3-0 win against Sunderland, has been formidable at the Coventry Building Society Arena, experiencing only one defeat in 11 home matches, although six draws have contributed to a somewhat frustrating campaign so far.
