Furthermore, the Addicks are just four points above the relegation zone, although Reading still have a game in hand, with the two clubs set to face off against one another in two weeks.

Nevertheless, Charlton’s board are working hard to find a successor for Appleton and have identified Gary Rowett as a possible replacement for the ex-Lincoln City boss, according to a report from the South London Press.

However, the site also stated that Rowett, who was fired from Championship club Millwall in October, is unlikely to want to drop down a division after leading the Lions close to the playoffs last season.

Rowett was in command of The Den for four years and achieved a 38.8% victory record, winning 76 of 196 matches.

Writer’s perspective

If Charlton Athletic can pull off this appointment, it will be fantastic. Rowett has extensive experience in the Championship and with major clubs, including Derby County and Birmingham City. Additionally, Charlton is near to Millwall, which may entice Rowett.

However, considering his experience in the second tier for nearly a decade, it appears doubtful that Rowett would want to move down a division to lead a team in a League One relegation battle.
