Cipriani issued a message thanking his coaches, supporters, and team-mates after announcing his decision not to play again, admitting to the last group that he was “relentless” at times.

Cipriani stated: “Even though I’ve been semi-retired. This is my official announcement. I haven’t played in a long time, but I kept it open in my head. As I sat outside Costa, I messaged my agent and realized I didn’t want to play anymore. A sobering but equally liberating moment.

“Thank you to all of my coaches; I learned a lot from each of you. Thank you to all of the staff members at each club who are always such a diverse group of people. To the supporters who came out and wore their hearts on their sleeves, thank you for demonstrating love throughout my career; wonderful memories from all of the fans of each team I played for. To all of my teammates I played with, I loved it. I know I might be relentless at times, but we had a good time out there.

“I’ve learned a lot throughout my career, and when I look back, I’m glad for every moment. Anyway, this is from a semi-retired, now officially retired, former rugby player. I couldn’t be more excited about what’s happening now and in the future.”
