Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones has claimed that he gave goalkeeper Harry Isted a ‘hammering’ in the dressing room after his ‘big error’ cost the Addicks two points against Northampton on Saturday.

Charlton took the lead in the fourth minute at Sixfields thanks to a deflected effort from Karoy Anderson, and the visitors never looked back as Town failed to generate anything in attack.
However, Isted was caught on the ball with 10 minutes remaining, allowing Louis Appéré to score a straightforward tap-in, denying Charlton a critical and merited victory in their battle against relegation.

“I’m just so disappointed,” Jones stated. “It was a difficult game in the first half, but I thought we performed exceptionally in the second half.

“We won every first ball, landed on the second, did some really excellent stuff, and created two fantastic chances to put the game away.

“We made a tremendous mistake when drawing. We were in complete control, and I couldn’t see them scoring, which was disheartening because they hadn’t created anything all day.

“We defended brilliantly, winning every first and second ball, and we had two wonderful chances, but you can’t legislate for such a major error. It has cost us three points.

“I have hammered him (Isted). I definitely shouldn’t have done it, but he’s a superb goalie, and I’m really disappointed because it was a massive mistake. I gave him a hard time, but he’s a good kid and will recover.

“It’s good that we’re still unbeaten but we want to win games and we should have won today because we were the better side and they didn’t deserve anything.”
