With only a few games remaining in the season, the Oklahoma City Thunder have the opportunity to increase their lead in the Western Conference over the Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves. The Thunder were getting ready for a big game against the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday night, and Joel Embiid might return from his MCL injury. However, this no longer looks to be the case, as the reigning MVP skipped Tuesday morning’s shootaround and is still out for this game. This suggests that Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, and the Thunder will begin the day as favorites to Following Embiid’s absence from the 76ers’ shootaround on Tuesday morning, neither Gilgeous-Alexander nor Williams attended the Thunder’s shootaround. According to NBA on TNT reporter Jared Greenberg, Williams will miss this game against the 76ers due to an ankle ailment. Gilgeous-Alexander, who has been dealing with a quad ailment, was getting treatment while his team was on the floor playing. The MVP candidate is uncertain to play in Philadelphia on Tuesday.
The Thunder, who have won 10 of their previous 13 games, will be without Williams for the first time since losing 121-111 to the Indiana Pacers on March 12. Oklahoma City is 5-2 this season when Williams isn’t playing.
The same cannot be said for Gilgeous-Alexander, who is the team’s most significant player. The Thunder are 1-2 without SGA, most recently defeating the Phoenix Suns 128-103 without their star guard.
Gilgeous-Alexander has been on a tear this season and is in contention for the league MVP award, with Denver Nuggets standout Nikola Jokic. Shai has scored at least 30 points in 50 of his 71 games this year. However, he has not scored more than 30 points in any of his last four games.
With Williams out, the Thunder will rely on Josh Giddey to provide more output in the backcourt alongside Gilgeous-Alexander, provided he plays Tuesday against the 76ers. Giddey has been strong recently, averaging 22.8 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 7.4 assists per game while shooting 52.2 percent from three-point range in his last five games.
If Williams and Gilgeous-Alexander miss Tuesday night’s game against the 76ers, Isaiah Joe, Aaron Wiggins, and rookie guard Cason Wallace may all see more minutes off the bench.
With Williams already out, the Thunder will release more information on Gilgeous-Alexander’s status closer to the start of the game.
