Sheffield Wednesday set for battle as Championship clubs keen on 23-year-old

The Owls face a fight to keep Di’Shon Bernard this summer. Sheffield Wednesday will seek to keep defender Di’Shon Bernard in the summer transfer window.

According to The Sheffield Star, the Owls want to sign the 23-year-old to a new contract.

Bernard joined Hillsborough last summer on a free transfer after his contract with Manchester United expired.

Following his arrival, the centre-back established himself as a crucial player for the Owls this season, appearing in 36 games across all competitions.

In the run-up to the summer, it appears that the Jamaican international’s form has attracted a lot of attention from overseas.

A number of clubs want Sheffield Wednesday’s defender Di’Shon Bernard.
Bernard joined Sheffield Wednesday last summer on a one-year contract with no option to extend.

As a result, if no new deal is agreed upon in the next weeks, the 23-year-old will be free to depart the club for little or nothing in the summer.

According to the most recent update, the Owls are now anxious to extend Bernard’s contract at Hillsborough and have already begun talks with his representation regarding a new agreement.

Bernard is reportedly one of several first-team players with whom the club is in talks regarding a new contract.

However, they will be competing for his signature. A number of other Championship clubs, including one of the favourites for promotion next season, are reported to be interested in Bernard.

There are also reports that foreign teams are interested in signing the 23-year-old ahead of the 2024/25 season, having become aware of his current status following strong performances in English football’s second division.

Sheffield Wednesday, of course, made a stunning comeback from relegation to League One under Danny Rohl on the penultimate day of the Championship season.

With a 2-0 win over Sunderland at The Stadium of Light, the Owls finished 20th in the final standings, three points clear of the relegation zone.

They may so begin to organize for another Championship campaign next season, which they appear to hope Bernard will participate in.

Interested in Di’Shon Bernard will be no surprise to Sheffield Wednesday. It appears to make a lot of sense that Wednesday wants to keep Bernard this summer, while others want to sign him at the same time.

Last season, the centre back was one of the Owls’ top performances, contributing significantly to the club’s survival.

As a result, he is someone who may be able to assist the team move forward, and given his popularity in Hillsborough, this is a deal that should be well received.

However, now that he has established himself as a proven Championship operator and may be available on a free transfer, he will be an intriguing target for a variety of clubs.

That is bolstered by the fact that, at 23 years old, he still has lots of time to progress and may generate a significant profit for any club that contracts him.

With that in mind, it wouldn’t be surprising if there was a fierce competition for his services this summer.

If they do not win, Sheffield Wednesday will undoubtedly regret not signing Bernard to a longer contract last summer, or even including an option in his one-year deal, which would have ensured they could have received a fee for him if he left before the start of next season.
