Portsmouth Director reveals ambition to sign Manchester City midfielder following Championship promotion

Portsmouth sporting director Rich Hughes has expressed a desire to re-sign Manchester City midfielder Alex Robertson next season.

The on-loan Manchester City teenager helped Portsmouth win promotion to the Sky Bet Championship despite having his season-long loan at Pompey cut short in January owing to a long-standing knee ailment.

The 21-year-old sustained a catastrophic injury during a training session, forcing him to miss the rest of the season as Portsmouth won the Sky Bet League One title.

The Scotland-born midfielder has previously served as an unused replacement for Pep Guardiola, appearing in the Blues’ first-team squad on four occasions in the Premier League, Carabao Cup, and UEFA Champions League during the 2022/23 season.

Robertson recorded five direct goal involvements with Portsmouth.

and was enjoying his first loan stay in England, having previously played for Ross County in Scotland.

The midfielder made 23 league matches before suffering an ACL injury in the new year, and he also played in the Emirates FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and EFL Trophy for Portsmouth. Portsmouth manager John Mousinho had already expressed a desire to re-sign Robertson, which is now repeated by the club’s sporting director Rich Hughes. “Alex (Robertson) is a really talented player, and we like him. He’s still recovering from his injuries, so we’ll have to wait and see how things go, but if there was an opportunity to revisit those conversations, we would undoubtedly do so,” he told The News. Manchester City’s loanees from the City Football Academy have had remarkable success this season, with 20-year-old defender Callum Doyle helping Leicester City return to the Premier League.
