The Red Sox hope to extend their good streak as they approach the MLB All-Star break, and Alex Cora is confident in his club.
Boston won the series opener against the Oakland Athletics at Fenway Park on Tuesday. The New York Yankees’ slump continued with a loss to the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. That put the Red Sox 3 1/2 games behind the Bronx Bombers for the top slot in the American League wild card.
Craig Breslow, the Red Sox’s chief baseball officer, has not said how the front office will handle the team’s playoff push. Manager Alex Cora hopes the squad is “greedy,” but subsequently stressed that this was not an overt attempt to make a transaction before the MLB trade deadline. However, Boston’s seventh win in its past eight games provided Cora a positive outlook on the postseason.
“We discussed being greedy a few weeks ago; we saw a window, but I believe the window is getting bigger. According to Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic, Alex Cora revealed to reporters that it’s actually a door. “We can truly do this. We’re going to keep looking up there, playing excellent baseball, and seeing where it takes us.”
Breslow noted this week how important a playoff appearance may be for a young team. He also stated that the franchise is considering all options to achieve short- and long-term success.
The Red Sox’s continuous surge in the standings would further open the door to postseason baseball, allowing Boston to acquire players to help it on its path this season.
