NEW YORK (AP)— Following violent episodes linked to migrant shelter occupants that attracted national attention in recent weeks, New York is increasing a curfew to include other migrant shelters.
Mayor Eric Adams’ administration will enforce an 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew at 20 migrant shelters starting Monday, after first setting the restrictions at four other locations, spokesperson Kayla Mamelak said Sunday.
The curfew affects approximately 3,600 migrants, with the largest emergency shelter housing roughly 1,000 migrants in Long Island City, Queens, according to a list provided by the mayor’s office.
In response to local complaints, city officials temporarily restricted access to four shelters last month.
Mamelak stated that the curfews are consistent with limits already in place at NYC’s traditional homeless shelters and will allow for “more efficient capacity management” of migrants in the city’s custody.
“New York City continues to lead the nation in managing this national humanitarian crisis, and that includes prioritizing the health and safety of both asylum seekers in our care and New Yorkers who live in the communities surrounding the emergency shelters we manage,” she said in a statement sent via e-mail.
The increased curfews follow a wave of migrant-related violence and crime, prompting increasingly apocalyptic language from city and police officials.

A video of a group of migrants brawling with police in Times Square last month went viral, resulting in multiple arrests.
The 24 migrant shelters that are now subject to restrictions are only a fraction of the city’s more than 200 such facilities, which host some 66,000 freshly arrived asylum seekers.
