Houston — At the NFL owners meeting, the league will vote on whether to recognize Houston Texans chairman and CEO Cal McNair as the franchise’s new major owner, according to an ESPN source.

The NFL’s owners are set to vote Tuesday morning.

The Texans’ longtime owner, Bob McNair, died in November 2018. His wife, Janice McNair, became the Texans’ major owner and is one of ten women who hold that position.

Following his father’s passing, Cal took over the Texans’ daily football procedures and has represented the team during owner meetings in Janice’s absence.

The predicted vote, which was originally reported by The Houston Chronicle, does not imply that the team is available for purchase, as a source informed ESPN that the Texans are not for sale and “have no plans for that.”

If the other NFL owners vote in Cal’s favor, he will continue to govern the franchise as he has for the last five seasons. The Texans have gone 31-51-1 since then.

The vote comes after one of Janice’s sons filed a petition last month seeking to deem her incapable and appoint a guardian. In November, Robert Cary McNair Jr. filed an application for the appointment of a guardian for Janice in probate court in Harris County, which includes Houston.

However, on February 26, Cary McNair’s lawyers and others engaged in the case submitted a motion agreeing to mutually abandon the complaint.
