According to a report from the Irish Mirror, Hull City is set to assess the skills of Shelbourne striker Gavin Hodgins during a trial period. The 18-year-old player has been invited by Hull City to train with them for a week. Additionally, Ipswich Town and Dutch club AZ Alkmaar are showing interest in him. Although Shelbourne values Hodgins, they may struggle to retain him as he recently signed his first professional contract. In this latest development, the Irish Mirror suggests that he is headed to the MKM Stadium as Hull City intends to closely evaluate him.
Gavin Hodgins, a Republic of Ireland youth international, has already made seven first-team appearances for Shelbourne, debuting at just 16. His impressive performance with the Reds’ Under-19 team, scoring 16 goals this season, has caught the attention of other clubs.
Hull City’s owner, Acun Ilicali, took over at Tolka Park earlier this year, which could work in their favor in securing Hodgins, giving them an edge over Ipswich and AZ Alkmaar. Hull City has a history of sending young players to the League of Ireland on loan deals, such as Harry Wood and Will Jarvis, and permanently transferring goalkeeper Harry Fisk to Shelbourne.
Hull City may view Hodgins as a potential addition to their attacking options in the future, as they have been actively bolstering their development squad with signings like Bora Aydınlık and Tyrell Sellars-Fleming in recent times.
Hull City’s first team is preparing for a home match against Southampton this weekend, sitting just one point outside of the play-off positions in the league standings.
