Wolverhampton Wanderers turned down a late summer offer from Sporting, who were keen on reacquiring the services of playmaker Pablo Sarabia. Wolves had a rather eventful conclusion to the summer transfer window, marked by significant transfers in and out.
Matheus Nunes made a significant move to Manchester City, while Wolves introduced several new players to their squad, namely Santiago Bueno, Enso Gonzalez, Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, and Tommy Doyle, injecting fresh talent into the team under the leadership of Gary O’Neil.
Nonetheless, there was potential for another departure as Wolves declined a late approach. Sporting expressed interest in Pablo Sarabia, and this Sporting-centric website, Leonino, has reported an exclusive insight into this situation.
According to the report, Sporting inquired about the possibility of acquiring Sarabia just days before the transfer window’s closure. Wolves, however, remained resolute in their decision, refusing to entertain any deal with Sporting, whether it be a loan or a permanent transfer.
Sporting was taken aback by Wolves’ firm response, as they had hoped to welcome Sarabia back to Lisbon, considering his successful loan spell at Sporting from Paris Saint-Germain during the 2021-22 season, during which Sarabia scored 21 goals and provided eight assists across all competitions, endearing himself to Sporting fans.
Wolves, on the other hand, remained steadfast in denying Sporting this emotional reunion with Sarabia, leaving the Portuguese club disappointed. It should be noted that Sarabia’s potential exit in 2024 wouldn’t be entirely unexpected.
It’s worth noting that Sarabia was a player closely associated with Julen Lopetegui. Lopetegui had previously worked with Sarabia in the Real Madrid setup and spoke highly of their longstanding relationship when Wolves signed Sarabia earlier in the year.
However, Sarabia failed to find his rhythm in a Wolves jersey, managing only one goal and no assists in 13 games under Lopetegui. Sarabia has been striving to prove his worth to O’Neil but has started just two Premier League games this season, accumulating a mere 189 minutes of league action.
In his most recent appearance at Bournemouth, Sarabia was given just 15 minutes on the pitch, raising questions about his future at Wolves. If his playing time doesn’t increase before January, it wouldn’t come as a surprise to see him seek opportunities elsewhere, with Sporting possibly revisiting their interest in him.
