Senior Newcastle scout Mick Tait was in the stands for England’s 3-1 triumph over Scotland on Tuesday night, according to The Chronicle, to monitor two players in particular.
Lee Ryder reports that he was there to watch Manchester United’s Scott McTominay and Watford center-back Ryan Porteous, two Scots assigned to Steve Clarke’s starting lineup at Hampden Park.
McTominay was extensively connected earlier in the summer transfer season, but the club instead signed AC Milan’s Sandro Tonali. However, it appears that the 6ft 4′ midfielder will stay on our radar in 2024.
Porteous, 24, has impressed for both club and country since joining Watford from Hibernian in January. He’s also a right-sided centre-back, which is an area we’re hoping to improve in the coming transfer windows to provide more depth and competition for Fabian Schar.
The summer transfer market hasn’t yet ended, but Eddie Howe has previously stated that it takes “months” of work to line up targets, so this is likely to be one of several scouting expeditions Mick Tait will embark on between now and January.
