Elliot Embleton scored for the Rams’ U21 team this month as he improved his match fitness after joining Derby County on loan.
Elliot Embleton of Sunderland made his competitive comeback this week after spending the previous nine months on the sidelines, and he wasted little time in making an impact for Derby County. The Black Cats decided the midfielder would receive more game time with the League One team than on Wearside while he strives to regain his health, so he signed a season-long loan agreement with the Rams on transfer deadline day.
Academy product Embleton had been out of action since breaking his ankle and suffering serious ligament damage in Sunderland’s Championship draw at Hull City in December, with the challenge that caused his injury also seeing him shown a red card. Embleton was eased back into competitive action as he started for Derby’s U21 side in their 5-2 Central League Cup win against Lincoln City at the Rams’ Moor Farm training base this week, and the 24-year-old needed just three minutes to get on the scoresheet to set his side on the road to victory.
Embleton was substituted at half-time, with his replacement Tony Weston going on to score a hat-trick. Derby’s next game sees them take on Portsmouth at Pride Park on Saturday, and Embleton could now be included in boss Paul Warne’s plans for that fixture.
If he does not play against Pompey, Derby will play Lincoln City once more on Tuesday night at Pride Park, this time in the EFL Trophy. The Sunderland sporting director has stated that the matter would be reassessed in the new year. Embleton’s loan arrangement is scheduled to last until the end of the current campaign, but, as is customary with such agreements, there is a recall provision that can be activated in January.
Following Embleton’s transfer to Derby at the beginning of the month, Speakman stated, “Elliot is returning from a long-term injury and it’s crucial that we get him back up to speed as quickly as possible. To achieve that, though, we felt that he required minutes. Elliot and I talked about the move after Derby’s offer, and we both felt that it would meet his immediate needs.
